Starfish as a Reef Tank Cleanup Crew
Starfish are an important part of a reef tank’s cleanup crew, offering both functional benefits and natural beauty. Many species feed on detritus, leftover food, and algae, helping to keep the tank clean and maintain stable water quality. Some starfish specialize in grazing on biofilm and microalgae that can accumulate on live rock, glass, and substrate, complementing the work of snails, urchins, and conchs.
Different starfish species bring unique roles to the aquarium: Brittle Starfish scavenge the sandbed and crevices for uneaten food, actively preventing nutrient buildup, while Sand Starfish sift through substrate to aerate it and reduce detritus. Larger species, such as Fromia Starfish, are effective algae grazers that also add visual interest.
Together, starfish form an integral part of a balanced cleanup crew, enhancing reef health, reducing manual maintenance, and supporting a thriving, natural ecosystem.
