Serpent Sea Star – Ophioderma sp.
The Serpent Star is a visually striking invertebrate characterized by a central disc with five long, slender arms covered in textured scales. Colors vary widely, from deep maroon and burnt orange to vibrant green, with subtle patterns on the central disc giving each individual a unique appearance. While primarily nocturnal, this sea star gradually becomes more active during daylight hours, slowly exploring rockwork and sandy substrate.
This species performs best in well-established aquariums of 30 gallons or larger with plenty of hiding spots and open areas for movement. It is extremely sensitive to rapid fluctuations in water chemistry and should only be introduced via careful drip acclimation. Handling should be minimal, and exposure to air must be avoided, as even brief contact can be harmful.
A carnivorous scavenger, the Serpent Sea Star feeds on finely chopped meaty foods such as PE Mysis Shrimp, LRS's Chunky, and Pro Salt's Monster Mix. By foraging across the substrate, it helps keep the tank clean while providing a dynamic and intriguing addition to reef environments.
Approximate Product Size: Oral Disc of 1-1 1/2".
