Sand Sifting Sea Star – Astropecten polycanthus

The Sand Sifting Sea Star may appear drab at first, but its thick, spine-covered arms reveal alternating bands of brown and beige that add subtle beauty to any reef display. A nocturnal omnivore, it actively consumes detritus, uneaten food, and occasionally small invertebrates. This peaceful starfish moves through the sand, aerating the substrate while feeding, making it both functional and captivating in your aquarium.

Ideal for aquariums of at least 40 gallons with plenty of open sand bed, the Sand Sifting Sea Star requires deep sand beds to burrow and forage effectively. Avoid housing it with natural predators such as puffers, and ensure ample space for it to move without interference. Drip acclimation is essential, and it must never be exposed to air during handling. This invertebrate is highly sensitive to sudden changes in salinity, oxygen levels, and pH, and cannot tolerate copper-based medications.

Feed a varied diet of natural foods to prevent starvation, as these starfish will otherwise deplete detritus quickly and risk decline if insufficient food is available.  Supplement by burying meaty foods, like PE Mysis or LRS Chunky, in the sand bed.
