WWC Blueberry Encrusting Hydnophora
Species: Hydnophora spp.
Coral Type: Moderate SPS
Blueberry Encrusting Hydnophora is an SPS coral prized for its deep bluish-purple coloration and dramatic encrusting growth habit. The coral forms thick, undulating plates that spread across rockwork, with small polyps extending slightly to give the surface a textured appearance. Its skeleton develops short, stubby protrusions, giving a rugged “berry-like” texture that enhances its visual interest. Under actinic or blue-spectrum lighting, its pigments fluoresce beautifully, making it a standout addition to mature SPS reef aquariums.
Coral Type: Moderate SPS
Lighting: Moderate to High lighting requirements (approximately 150–250 PAR)
Flow Rate: Moderate to High; indirect turbulence helps maintain polyp extension and prevents detritus buildup
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae; occasional target feeding with fine coral foods such as ReefRoids or Benereef can enhance growth and coloration
Aggression: Low toward neighboring corals, though its encrusting growth can slowly overtake nearby surfaces
Substrate: Best placed on stable rockwork or reef structures where it can encrust and expand naturally
We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
