Sea Biscuit — Clypeasteroida spp.

The Sea Biscuit is a unique, reef-safe echinoderm with a flattened, disc-shaped body covered in tiny spines, giving it a soft, velvety appearance. Slow-moving and peaceful, it spends most of its time burrowing slightly into sandy substrates, feeding on detritus, microalgae, and other organic matter, helping maintain a clean tank environment. Its unusual shape and gentle behavior make it an intriguing addition for hobbyists who enjoy observing natural invertebrate activity.

Sea Biscuits thrive in established reef tanks with stable water parameters, deep sandbeds, and minimal strong flow to avoid stress or dislodgment. Introduce only to mature systems with abundant sand and microfauna. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide adequate substrate for natural burrowing and grazing.

Their diet can be supplemented with finely powdered or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum, alongside natural detritus and microfauna grazing. Target feeding supports health and encourages natural burrowing behavior.
