Tomini Tang – Ctenochaetus tominiensis
Physical description:
The Tomini Tang boasts a sleek, olive-brown to tan body with subtle golden flecks around the face and a striking white caudal (tail) fin. Its dorsal and anal fins flare with vivid yellow or orange tips, giving it a warm, flame-fin appearance. When mature, its body deepens in tone while the fin coloration remains brilliantly contrasted. This is a compact surgeonfish, reaching around 6" (≈ 15 cm) in the aquarium. Wikipedia+2HIGH TIDE AQUATICS+2
Behavioral description:
A generally peaceful but somewhat territorial species, the Tomini Tang may assert dominance over other tangs, especially those in its own genus. Reeflings+2Reefs.com+2 It is an active grazer, constantly browsing over rockwork and surfaces for algae and detritus. HIGH TIDE AQUATICS+1 While it’s hardy, it thrives best in a well-established reef system with stable water quality.
Suitable tank description:
Tomini Tangs do best in a mature, stable reef aquarium with both ample live rock for grazing and open swimming areas. Most hobbyists recommend adding them after your system has cycled fully. A minimum tank size of 70 gallons (≈ 265 L)is suggested to provide enough swimming room and territory. Reefs.com
Diet description:
They primarily feed on algae and detritus, so offering marine‐based diets from trusted brands — San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, or New Life Spectrum — supports their grazing habits. Because they naturally take in a lot of algae, supplementing with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies is a great way to mimic their wild diet and maintain gut health.
Approximate product size:
Available in sizes around 2–3″ (juvenile) up to 3–4″, with adult specimens reaching about 6″ in well-maintained aquariums. Coral Ridge Marine+1
