Yellow Tang – Zebrasoma flavescens

The Yellow Tang is a vibrant, bright-yellow surgeonfish that brings constant movement and color to a reef aquarium. Captive-bred by Biota in partnership with the Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University, these juveniles are well-adjusted, hardy, and known to adapt quickly to home systems. With a sleek, disc-like body and strong swimming behavior, they spend much of the day grazing on surfaces in search of algae. Their generally peaceful temperament makes them suitable for community aquariums when housed with unrelated species.

Yellow Tangs do best in mature reef systems of 90 gallons or more, though small juveniles can temporarily be kept in slightly smaller aquariums while they grow. Provide open swimming areas along with rock structures that allow for natural grazing and exploration. When adding one to a tank containing other tangs, use caution and consider an acclimation box to reduce territorial aggression.

A well-rounded herbivorous diet is essential for long-term health. Feed high-quality pellets such as TDO C1–C2 or New Life Spectrum, along with frozen spirulina brine or mysis from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, or PE. Supplement regularly with nori, such as Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies, to support their natural grazing instincts.

Approximate product size: ~1.25" - 2" (juvenile)

We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-guided quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of fish health. Our strict biosecurity practices prevent any cross-contamination between systems, supporting safe, reliable acclimation before animals enter their new homes.
