Strawberry/Tiger Conch – Conomurex luhuanus
The Strawberry or Tiger Conch is a small marine gastropod featuring bold, patterned shells in speckled reds, browns, and creams, reaching an adult size of 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm). These active, sand-dwelling invertebrates use their muscular foot and operculum to “hop” across the substrate, giving them a playful, animated appearance. They spend most of their time grazing just beneath or on the surface of the sandbed, consuming detritus, diatoms, and film algae, while remaining peaceful and reef-safe. Conchs combine practical cleanup abilities with entertaining behavior, making them a favorite among hobbyists.
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient substrate for foraging and grazing. Introduce Strawberry or Tiger Conchs into well-established aquaria with stable water parameters and fine sand beds. Multiple individuals can coexist peacefully and will help keep the sandbed clean and oxygenated while adding visual interest.
As a detritivore and microalgae grazer, feed Strawberry and Tiger Conchs dried seaweedsuch as Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies or supplemental omnivore foods such as New Life Spectrum Marine Formula or TDO Chromaboost, allowing small particles to settle naturally into the sand for grazing.
