Starry Blenny — Salarias ramosus
The Starry Blenny is a charming and hardy reef fish known for its mottled brown body covered with tiny white or blue “star-like” spots, giving it a celestial appearance. Full of personality, it perches on rocks and corals, observing its surroundings with expressive eyes before darting off to graze on algae. Generally peaceful, it may show mild territorial behavior toward similar-shaped fish but is an excellent community addition for most reef tanks.
Starry Blennies thrive in established reef aquariums with stable water parameters, moderate flow, and plentiful live rock for grazing and perching. Introduce them only to mature systems with naturally occurring algae to support their foraging habits. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide adequate territory and grazing space.
Their diet should include algae-based foods such as Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies, along with high-quality frozen or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum to support their nutritional needs. Supplemental feeding helps maintain vibrant coloration and steady activity.
