Deer Cowrie - Cypraea cervus

The Deer Cowrie is a large and attractive marine snail known for its smooth, glossy shell patterned in rich brown tones with lighter speckling and a long, oval shape. Reaching an adult size of approximately 4 inches, this nocturnal grazer spends much of its time moving across rockwork and substrate in search of algae, biofilm, and detritus. Deer Cowries are generally peaceful and reef safe, though very large individuals may occasionally disturb unsecured coral frags while exploring. Their striking shell appearance and useful grazing behavior make them an interesting addition to mature marine aquariums.

The Deer Cowrie thrives in established reef or fish-only systems with abundant live rock and mature algae growth for grazing. A minimum tank size of 50 gallons is recommended due to its adult size and active nighttime movement. This species should be added to stable, mature aquariums with sufficient natural grazing opportunities and minimal competition from aggressive invertebrates.

As an omnivorous grazer, the Deer Cowrie benefits from a varied diet of algae and supplemental prepared foods. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies in an algae clip, New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets, and occasional small offerings of PE Mysis or Hikari Brine Shrimp to support long-term health and shell growth.
