Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp – Lysmata amboinensis
The Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp is a brightly colored reef invertebrate recognized by its vivid yellow body, twin red dorsal stripes, and a crisp white center stripe. Reaching up to 3 inches, it is highly active and well known for its specialized cleaning behavior—setting up “stations” where fish line up to have parasites and dead tissue removed, even from inside their mouths. This shrimp is peaceful, social, and often found perching on rock ledges while waving its long white antennae to attract clients. Its engaging behavior and bold coloration make it a favorite among reef aquarists.
This species thrives in established aquariums with abundant live rock, caves, and overhangs for perching and hiding. A tank of at least 10 gallons is recommended to ensure stable water parameters and sufficient habitat. Avoid housing it with predatory tankmates such as hawkfish, lionfish, or large crabs, which may view it as prey. Add Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp only after the tank has matured enough to provide biological stability for sensitive invertebrates.
These shrimp are omnivores and benefit from a diet of small meaty foods. Offer finely chopped frozen options such as Hikari Brine Shrimp or PE Mysis, which support natural foraging behavior and overall health.
