Sea Biscuit — Clypeaster subdepressus

The Clypeaster subdepressus Sea Biscuit features a thick, oval body with a sculpted star pattern across its surface and a velvety texture from fine spines. This peaceful echinoderm spends most of its time slowly gliding across sandbeds, sifting detritus and microalgae. Hardy and reef-safe, it contributes to natural substrate turnover while remaining unobtrusive and calm in mixed reef environments.

Sea Biscuits thrive in established reef tanks with mature sandbeds rich in microfauna and detritus. Add only after the system has stabilized and developed a healthy biological layer within the substrate. A minimum tank size of 40 gallons is recommended to provide ample foraging area.

Their diet can be supported with occasional offerings of fine particulate foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum to ensure proper nutrition. If natural algae becomes limited, supplement lightly with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies.
