Scribble Rabbitfish – Siganus virgatus
The Scribble Rabbitfish, also known as the Two Barred Rabbitfish, is a striking herbivore featuring a cream-to-tan body overlaid with intricate wavy blue scribble markings and bold facial bands. Reaching up to ~11–12 inches as an adult, this species makes an impressive and active showpiece in larger marine aquariums. Generally peaceful and reef-safe with caution, Scribble Rabbitfish may nibble on fleshy corals if underfed, but excel at controlling nuisance algae. They possess venomous dorsal spines used only defensively—handle with care during transfers or maintenance.
This species thrives in well-established systems with plenty of swimming space, rockwork, and naturally growing algae. We recommend a minimum tank size of 125 gallons for adults due to their size and activity level.
A primarily herbivorous grazer, the Scribble Rabbitfish eagerly consumes macroalgae and prepared foods like Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 (frozen or pellets), San Francisco Bay Brand Spirulina Mysis Shrimp, and New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets.
