Physical & Behavioral Description
The Purple Tang is a striking surgeonfish featuring a deep royal blue to violet body contrasted by a bright yellow tail and subtle yellow accents on the pectoral fins. As it matures, it develops the tall, disc-shaped profile typical of the Zebrasoma genus, reaching up to 10 inches in length. This species is an active and constant swimmer, adding bold color and movement to the aquarium. While highly prized, it can be territorial—especially toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish—so careful planning is essential.

Suitable Tank Description
A minimum aquarium size of 125 gallons is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and reduce aggression. This species thrives in systems with strong flow, stable parameters, open swimming lanes, and ample live rock for grazing and shelter. It is best added later in the stocking order after more passive tankmates have established themselves.

Diet Description
A strict herbivore that requires a diet rich in marine algae and high-quality prepared foods. Offer a variety of options including San Francisco Bay Brand Spirulina blends, Hikari preparations, PE Mysis, and pellets such as TDO and New Life Spectrum. Regular feedings of Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies are highly recommended to support immune health, maintain vibrant coloration, and reduce aggression.
