Powder Brown Tang – Acanthurus japonicus

Physical Description. The Powder Brown Tang has a rich, powdery-brown body with a distinct white patch between the eye and mouth, accented by vibrant blue edging on its dorsal and anal fins and a subtle orange stripe. It typically grows to around 8″ (20 cm) in length.

Behavioral Description. This species is an active grazer, patrolling live rock for algae while using its sharp “scalpel” spine at the base of its tail for defense. It can be semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs, and may establish a territory if housed with similarly shaped species.

Suitable Tank Description. A mature reef tank with at least 125 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress. Introduce the tang after the system is fully cycled and stable; if mixing with other tangs, simultaneous or last additions help minimize aggression.

Diet Description. Feed a primarily herbivorous diet using high-quality algae- and seaweed-based foods from brands like San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, or New Life Spectrum. Because this tang grazes heavily, offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies clipped to the rock to mimic its natural feeding behavior.

Approximate Product Size: Typically available in small (2–2.5″), medium (2.5–3.5″), or large (up to 6″) specimens.
