Powder Blue Tang – Acanthurus leucosternon
Physical & Behavioral Description
The Powder Blue Tang is renowned for its electric blue body, contrasting black facial mask, and vibrant yellow dorsal fin that create a bold, high-contrast appearance. At the medium (juvenile to subadult) size range, it is an energetic and agile swimmer, frequently patrolling the mid to upper levels of the aquarium. This species is highly active and constantly grazes, adding movement and color to any reef system. While stunning, it can be semi-aggressive, particularly toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish.
Suitable Tank Description
Best suited for well-established reef aquariums of at least 120 gallons, with strong water flow, stable parameters, and ample open swimming space. Plenty of live rock should be provided for grazing and shelter. This species should be added after the tank is fully cycled and ideally later in the stocking order to reduce territorial aggression.
Diet Description
A dedicated herbivore that requires frequent feedings of marine algae and high-quality prepared foods. Offer a varied diet including frozen options from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, and PE Mysis, along with pellets such as TDO and New Life Spectrum. Daily supplementation with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies is strongly recommended to support digestion, immune health, and vibrant coloration.
