Peppermint Shrimp – Lysmata spp.
The Peppermint Shrimp is a vibrant, reef-safe invertebrate recognized for its translucent body adorned with thin, bold red striping. Highly active and social, it spends its time scavenging through rockwork and substrate for leftover food and detritus. Peaceful and engaging to watch, it makes an excellent addition to a diverse cleanup crew. Many hobbyists value the Peppermint Shrimp for its natural tendency to prey on nuisance Aiptasia anemones, although for the most effective Aiptasia treatment we recommend using products such as Frank's Aquarium's F-Aiptasia in concert with the addition of Peppermint Shrimp.
Peppermint Shrimp thrive in mature reef aquariums above 15 gallons with ample live rock, small caves, and shaded crevices where they can retreat between scavenging sessions. Introduce them once your tank is well established and stable, typically after parameters have remained consistent for several weeks to months post-cycle. Like other invertebrates, they require stable water quality and should never be exposed to copper-based treatments.
While they obtain much of their nutrition from scavenging, Peppermint Shrimp readily accept supplemental prepared foods. Offer small portions of high-quality items such as PE Mysis Shrimp, Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies, or TDO Chromaboost pellets.
