Orangeshoulder Tang – Acanthurus olivaceus

Physical & Behavioral Description
The Orangeshoulder Tang is a striking surgeonfish known for its dramatic transformation from a bright yellow juvenile to a sophisticated adult with a light gray front half and darker gray-blue rear body. A vivid orange patch above the pectoral fin, outlined in darker coloration, gives this species its signature “shoulder” marking, while the tail develops an elegant lyre shape with maturity. Adults can reach up to 14 inches and are highly active swimmers, constantly cruising the aquarium. While generally more peaceful than many tangs, they may show mild territorial behavior toward similar species if space is limited.

Suitable Tank Description
Best suited for large systems of at least 180 gallons to accommodate their size and need for open swimming space. Provide strong water flow, stable parameters, and ample live rock for grazing. This species is ideally added mid- to late-stocking, though introducing a juvenile alongside established tankmates can help minimize aggression, especially when keeping multiple tangs.  This species is reef safe.

Diet Description
An herbivore that requires a diet rich in marine algae, supplemented with high-quality prepared foods such as New Life Spectrum pellets and TDO, along with frozen options like PE Mysis and Hikari blends. Regular offerings of Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies are highly recommended to support immune health, reduce aggression, and maintain optimal coloration.
