Lawnmower Blenny - Salarias fasciatus
The Lawnmower Blenny is popular for its personality and unique looks. Mottled gray or tan in color, with large eyes, and a body shape, typical of the Blenniidae family, also know as the Sailfin Blenny, it adds movement in the lower third or bottom of any marine aquarium. While it can grow to 5” in size, it remains one of the more peaceful reef inhabitants in the Blennidae family.
Also known as the Jeweled Rockskipper or Rock Blenny, the Lawnmower Blenny is native to the Indo-Pacific. Like other Blennies, the Lawnmower Blenny will rest or perch on the aquarium’s substrate, hide in caves, move across the substrate, and feed on microalgae. The Sailfin Blenny can thrive in smaller reef environments but will do very well in larger systems with a variety of live rock and vast aquascape.
The Lawnmower Blenny is a peaceful reef inhabitant and remains peaceful to other fish unless its tank mate is similar in shape or appearance to the blenny. While known as reef safe, it may nip at small-polyp stony corals and clam mantles.
Diet is mainly natural algae in a mature aquarium. The Lawnmower Blenny’s diet can be supplemented with vegetable matter, spirulina, and herbivore preparations
