Reaching an adult size of approximately 5 inches, this species is a member of the grouper and basslet family and is known for its confident hunting behavior and slow, deliberate swimming style. Indigo Hamlets are generally semi-aggressive, especially toward smaller fish or similarly shaped species, but are otherwise relatively peaceful in appropriately sized systems. Their bold coloration and unique behavior make them a standout species in Caribbean-themed reef aquariums.
The Indigo Hamlet thrives in well-established marine aquariums with ample rockwork for territory establishment and open space for ambush-style hunting behavior. A minimum tank size of 40 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, though larger systems are preferred if housing with other semi-aggressive fish.
