Hippo Tang – (S) – Paracanthurus hepatus

The Hippo Tang displays the classic deep-blue body, bold black palette pattern, and bright yellow tail that make this species one of the most recognizable fish in the hobby.  Known for its active personality and playful movements through rockwork, a small Hippo Tang quickly becomes a standout centerpiece fish.

This species requires a large aquarium with long swimming runs, stable water parameters, and strong, oxygen-rich flow. Add only after the aquarium has been established for many months to ensure stability and reduced stress. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended for any Blue Hippo Tang. 

Hippo Tangs are heavy grazers and should receive a varied diet that includes algae-based foods and premium offerings from San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum. For essential plant matter and continuous grazing nutrition, supplement daily with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies.
