ECC Orange Fungia

Species: Fungia sp.

Coral Type: LPS Coral (Large Polyp Stony) – Free-Living Plate Coral

Physical Description: Orange Fungia is a striking free-living plate coral known for its bold, saturated orange coloration and iconic dome-shaped disk. The coral features radiating skeletal ridges covered in fleshy tissue that expands into a smooth, circular plate during full extension. Its vibrant orange tones can range from bright tangerine to deep sunset hues, often intensifying under blue-spectrum lighting where the coral develops a glowing, almost molten appearance. As a solitary LPS species, it does not attach to rockwork and instead rests freely on the substrate, inflating during the day to reveal its full, fleshy form and subtle mouth structure at the center of the disk.

Coral Type: LPS (Large Polyp Stony) – Free-Living
Lighting: Moderate to High (approximately 100–200 PAR)
Flow Rate: Low to Moderate with gentle, indirect flow to avoid tissue irritation and allow full expansion
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from occasional target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, reef blends, or finely chopped seafood.
Aggression: Moderate; capable of extending feeder tentacles and should be spaced appropriately from nearby corals.
Substrate: Best placed on soft sandy substrate where it can rest freely without contact from sharp or abrasive surfaces.
