Species: Blastomussa merletti
Coral Type: LPS Coral (Large Polyp Stony)
Physical Description: Head Hunter Blastomussa is a highly sought-after LPS coral known for its intense contrast, fleshy polyps, and “predatory” visual appeal. Each polyp is large, rounded, and heavily inflated, typically featuring a dark base—ranging from deep maroon to nearly black or dark purple—paired with sharply contrasting oral centers in neon green, electric yellow, or glowing teal. The separation between polyps is pronounced, giving the colony a clustered, jewel-like appearance that stands out even in lower-light reef zones. Under actinic and blue-spectrum lighting, the fluorescent centers intensify dramatically, creating a vivid, almost “glowing eyes in the dark” effect that defines the Head Hunter aesthetic.
Coral Type: LPS (Large Polyp Stony)
Lighting: Low to Moderate (approximately 50–120 PAR)
Flow Rate: Low to Moderate with gentle, indirect flow to allow full polyp inflation and prevent tissue stress
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from regular target feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, reef blends, or finely chopped seafood
Aggression: Low to Moderate; generally peaceful but should be spaced from more aggressive neighbors to avoid tissue damage
Substrate: Best placed on stable rockwork or lower reef structures where polyps can expand freely without abrasion
We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
