Desjardin Sailfin Tang — Ctenochaetus desjardinii
The Desjardin Tang, also known as the Red Sea Tang or the Kole Tang, is a stunning reef fish with a vibrant golden-brown body and distinctive pattern of radial lines across its flanks. Its sharp contrast of dark edges on the fins and its subtle red and yellow hues make it a standout in larger aquariums. Peaceful and active, this tang is an efficient algae grazer, spending much of its time helping to maintain a clean and healthy reef tank. While generally peaceful, it may show some territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially those of similar shape.
Desjardin Tangs thrive in established reef tanks with stable water parameters, abundant live rock for grazing, and plenty of open swimming space. A minimum tank size of 100 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred to provide ample space for active swimming and grazing.
Their diet should include high-quality algae-based foods such as Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies, along with high-quality frozen or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum. Supplementing with meaty foods can also help provide additional nutrients and maintain vibrant coloration. Target feeding encourages active grazing behavior and optimal health.
