Deer Cowrie – Cypraea cervus
The Deer Cowrie is a beautifully patterned marine snail featuring a glossy, domed shell with warm brown tones and distinct pale spots reminiscent of a deer's coat. Its mantle extends over the shell during active periods, showcasing intricate textures and providing natural protection. Peaceful and mostly nocturnal, this cowrie spends its time grazing across rockwork and glass, contributing to a clean and balanced reef environment. Hardy and slow-moving, it is an excellent addition for hobbyists seeking a functional and visually striking invertebrate.
Deer Cowries thrive in stable, well-established reef aquariums with ample live rock and plenty of grazing surfaces. They should be introduced only after the tank has fully matured and developed a steady film of natural algae. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended due to their adult size and active grazing patterns.
While primarily herbivorous, Deer Cowries benefit from supplemental feeding when natural algae is limited. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies along with occasional small meaty items from San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, or New Life Spectrum to ensure complete nutrition.
Approximate product size: Typically 2.5"–3.5", depending on age and collection origin.
Additional reliably sourced information: According to marine invertebrate guides and field documentation, the Deer Cowrie is one of the larger cowrie species found in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. Unlike some predatory cowries, Cypraea cervus is considered reef-safe with corals and ornamental inverts when well-fed, making it a reliable algae grazer for mixed reef systems.
