Teddy Bear Crab — Achaeus japonicus

The Achaeus japonicus Teddy Bear Crab is a small, fuzzy-looking reef invertebrate covered in fine hair-like setae, giving it a distinctive “teddy bear” appearance. Peaceful and reef-safe, it spends most of its time hiding among rockwork or coral branches, emerging to scavenge for detritus and small food particles. Its gentle temperament and adorable appearance make it a favorite among hobbyists seeking both charm and utility in reef cleanup.

Teddy Bear Crabs thrive in established reef tanks with stable water parameters, plenty of hiding spots, and a mature, clean substrate. Add them only after the aquarium has stabilized and predators are minimal. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with larger tanks supporting multiple crabs comfortably.

Their diet can be supplemented with finely chopped or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum, ensuring proper nutrition alongside natural detritus scavenging.
