Chocolate Tang – Acanthurus pyroferus

Physical & Behavioral Description
The Chocolate Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus), also know as Mimic Lemon Peel Tang, is a striking surgeonfish known for its rich brown body accented by bold orange to yellow highlights along the fins and face, reaching an adult size of approximately 9–10 inches. Juveniles often mimic dwarf angelfish species, making this tang especially interesting for hobbyist reefers. As it matures, it develops the classic tang profile with a laterally compressed body and a visible caudal spine. Generally peaceful but active, the Chocolate Tang does best as one of the first or only tangs in a system to minimize territorial behavior.

Suitable Tank Description
This species requires a minimum tank size of 125 gallons, with ample swimming room and plenty of live rock for grazing. It should be added earlier in the stocking order, before more aggressive or similarly shaped tangs. Stable water quality and high oxygenation are essential for long-term success.

Diet Description
The Chocolate Tang is a dedicated herbivore that thrives on a varied algae-based diet. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies daily using an algae clip, supplemented with Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 Frozen Food and Pellets, San Francisco Bay Brand Seaweed Delight or Emerald Entre or Spirulina Mysis Shrimp, or New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets.
