Chalk Basslet

Chalk Basslet -  Serranus tortugarum

The Chalk Basslet or Chlak Bass, as it is also named,  is one of the smaller bass within this family. Its body is orange with a purple mid-section and electric blue vertical bands. Typically, from the Carribean, this smaller basslet makes a great started aquarium inhabitant.

A 30-gallon aquarium, with plenty of live rock for hiding, amd esy to moderate water movement is an ideal habitat. They are not aggressive towards other fish, and multiple specimens can be added to the aquarium at the same time. They are not known for picking at corals or invertebrates, and are a great fish for the reef aquarium. When larger, the Chalk Bass may attack small shrimps, especially those within the Periclimenes genus.

An extremely hardy fish, the Chalk Bass requires a carnivorous diet consisting of chopped meaty items, vitamin enriched brine and mysis shrimp and flake foods.
