Cerith Snail – Cerithium sp.

The Cerith Snail is a small but highly effective reef cleaner, recognized by its elegant, elongated spiral shell and constant foraging behavior. These active scavengers consume detritus, uneaten food, fish waste, and various algae, making them a valuable part of any clean-up crew. They frequently burrow into the sand, helping oxygenate the substrate and support a healthy microfauna population. Despite their modest size, Cerith Snails are known for their impressive nighttime activity, often emerging after dark to graze and occasionally lay distinctive looping egg ribbons on the glass.

Cerith Snails thrive in well-established reef aquariums of a minimum five gallons with mature rockwork and a deep sand bed. Stable water quality is essential, and they should be added once the system has developed a natural film of detritus, diatoms, and microalgae to support their grazing habits. As with all invertebrates, they require slow, careful acclimation and should never be exposed to copper-based treatments.

While they feed heavily on natural waste and algae, supplementing their diet can improve longevity. Offer small amounts of frozen mysis or enriched brine from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, or PE, along with algae pellets from TDO or New Life Spectrum when natural food sources are limited.
