Bird Wrasse — Gomphosus varius

The Gomphosus varius Bird Wrasse is a striking reef fish with an elongated snout, vibrant coloration ranging from green to blue with orange accents, and a slender, torpedo-shaped body. Active and curious, it spends much of its time foraging among live rock for small invertebrates, displaying dynamic swimming behavior that adds energy to reef aquariums. While generally peaceful with larger tankmates, it may prey on small crustaceans, so caution is advised in heavily invertebrate-populated systems.

Bird Wrasses thrive in established reef tanks with stable water parameters, ample live rock for foraging, and open swimming space. Introduce only to mature systems to reduce stress and ensure proper acclimation. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended to support their active swimming and territorial behavior.

Their diet should include high-quality frozen or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum, supplemented with small meaty invertebrates to mimic natural feeding. Target feeding encourages vibrant coloration and healthy activity.
