Schooling Bannerfish – Heniochus diphreutes
The Schooling Bannerfish is a striking butterflyfish species featuring a bright white body with two bold black bands, yellow dorsal and caudal fins, and a long, flowing white dorsal filament. Adults typically reach 7–8 inches in length and are easily distinguished from H. acuminatus by their rounder breast and shorter snout. This peaceful, active planktivore is known for its natural tendency to school, creating eye-catching movement in large reef displays. When well fed, it is generally reef safe and spends most of its time swimming gracefully in open water.
Provide a minimum tank size of 125 gallons, offering ample swimming room and moderate to high water flow to support their active nature. Schooling Bannerfish should be added after more territorial species have established their space, especially if introducing a group. Multiple individuals should be added at the same time to encourage harmonious schooling behavior.
As planktivorous omnivores, Schooling Bannerfish thrive on a varied diet including Hikari Angel & Butterfly, Hikari Mysis, PE Cyclopods, and pellets such as TDO Chromaboost or New Life Spectrum Marine Formula (ideally soaked in Brightwell Aquatics’ AngeLixir). Feeding a diversity of high-quality frozen and pellet foods helps maintain body condition, coloration, and reef-safe habits.
