Banggai Cardinalfish - Pterapogon kauderni
The Banggai Cardinalfish is a striking and elegant species recognized for its silver body, bold black striping, and elongated fins accented with white spots. Growing to an adult size of around 3 inches, this slow-swimming cardinalfish is well known for its peaceful temperament and fascinating hovering behavior among rockwork and corals. Banggai Cardinalfish are often kept singly, in bonded pairs, or carefully managed groups, though adults may become territorial toward conspecifics in smaller aquariums. Their calm demeanor and unique appearance make them a favorite among reef hobbyists.
The Banggai Cardinalfish does very well in peaceful reef aquariums with ample hiding spaces and moderate flow. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a single specimen or pair, while groups require significantly larger systems to reduce aggression. This species should be added before aggressive or highly active fish to ensure it acclimates comfortably to feeding and tankmates.
As a carnivore, the Banggai Cardinalfish thrives on a varied diet of nutrient-rich frozen foods and quality prepared diets. Offer PE Mysis, Hikari Brine Shrimp, finely chopped meaty seafoods, and high-quality pellets such as New Life Spectrum Marine Formula or TDO ChromaBoost to maintain excellent health and coloration.
