Banggai Cardinal – Pterapogon kauderni

The Banggai Cardinal, also known as the Kaudern’s Cardinalfish, is a highly sought-after species admired for its metallic silver body, bold black vertical bands, and delicate white spotting. Reaching an adult size of 3 inches, this slow, deliberate swimmer displays long, elegant fins that give it a graceful, hovering presence in the aquarium. Peaceful with most tankmates but territorial toward its own kind, the Banggai Cardinal is best kept singly or as a confirmed pair. It is also well known for its ease of captive breeding, with males mouthbrooding their clutch of eggs.

A minimum 30-gallon aquarium with ample cave-like rockwork and shaded areas is ideal for this species’ calm swimming style. Introduce Banggai Cardinals to a mature, stable tank, and avoid keeping multiple individuals unless they are a bonded pair to prevent aggression.

Offer a varied meaty diet including Hikari Brine Shrimp and PE Mysis, along with other suitable marine proteins. Multiple small feedings throughout the day help support long-term health and natural feeding behavior.
