Yellow-Belly Hippo – Small – Paracanthurus hepatus

The Yellow-Belly Hippo Tang features the classic deep-blue body and black “palette” markings of the standard Hippo Tang, but with a bright yellow wash across the lower half of the body. This regional variant shows active, confident swimming behavior and a playful temperament, often cruising the rockwork in search of grazing spots. As a juvenile (small size), it is especially vibrant and energetic, making it a standout centerpiece even at a young age.

This tang requires a mature, stable reef system with ample swimming space, strong flow, and plenty of rockwork for grazing and shelter. Add only after the tank has fully stabilized for several months, as tangs are sensitive to parameter swings. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is advised for juveniles, with plans to move to a 120+ gallon tank as it grows.

While it grazes heavily on algae, it should also be offered high-quality foods from San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum. Because it is an active herbivore, supplement its diet with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies for optimal health and coloration.
