WWC Hairy Gorilla Zoanthid

Species: Zoanthus spp.

Coral Type: Soft Coral / Colonial Polyp

WWC Hairy Gorilla Zoanthids are a dramatic, high-texture designer zoanthid known for their bold coloration and distinctive “fuzzy” appearance. Each polyp typically features a deep, dark base—often purple, maroon, or brown—surrounded by intense fluorescent accents such as neon green, yellow, or orange. The “hairy” effect comes from extended skirt-like tentacles and fine tissue texture that give the colony a shaggy, high-relief look compared to smoother zoanthids.

When fully extended, the colony has a wild, untamed aesthetic with strong contrast between the dark base and glowing centers. Under actinic or blue-spectrum lighting, the fluorescent elements become especially vivid, making the colony appear to glow from within.

Coral Type: Soft Coral / Zoanthid
Lighting: Moderate (approximately 75–150 PAR)
Flow Rate: Low to Moderate; gentle, indirect flow promotes healthy polyp extension and helps maintain clean tissue surfaces
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae; occasional feedings of fine particulate coral foods such as Reef Roids or Benereef may support enhanced growth and coloration
Aggression: Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive; generally reef-safe, though colonies can spread and may overgrow nearby corals if not managed
Placement: Best placed on isolated rock structures or zoa gardens where colonies can expand freely under stable lighting and flow conditions

We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
