Wheeler’s Watchman Goby - Cryptocentrus wheeleri
The Wheeler’s Watchman Goby is a small, sand-sifting marine goby featuring a pale cream body marked with fine orange to reddish spotting and subtle iridescent accents. Reaching an adult size of approximately 4 inches, this species is known for its shy yet engaging personality and its habit of hovering near burrow entrances within the sandbed. It spends much of its time perched or slowly surveying the substrate for food, quickly darting back into shelter when startled. Its calm demeanor and interesting natural behavior make it a popular choice for nano and reef aquariums.
The Wheeler’s Watchman Goby thrives in peaceful reef aquariums with a fine sand substrate and plenty of rockwork for shelter and burrow formation. A minimum tank size of 20–30 gallons is recommended for a single specimen or a compatible pair. This species should be added early in the stocking process to allow it to establish a stable burrow and acclimate before more active or territorial fish are introduced.
As a carnivore, the Wheeler’s Watchman Goby requires a diet of small, protein-rich marine foods that it can easily capture near the substrate. Offer PE Mysis, Hikari Brine Shrimp, PE Cyclopods, and Hikari Rotifers to support healthy growth, energy, and coloration.
