Tomini Tang - Ctenochaetus tominiensis

The Tomini Tang is a hardy and attractive bristletooth surgeonfish featuring a warm golden-brown body accented by fine blue edging along the dorsal and anal fins. Reaching an adult size of approximately 6 inches, this active grazer is constantly picking at rocks and aquarium surfaces in search of microalgae and detritus. Generally peaceful toward most tankmates, the Tomini Tang can show mild territorial behavior toward other tangs, especially similar body shapes. Its manageable size and excellent algae-cleaning behavior make it one of the most popular tangs for medium to large reef aquariums.

The Tomini Tang thrives in established reef systems with abundant live rock and strong water movement to support natural grazing behavior. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, with larger systems preferred for long-term stability and reduced territorial stress. This species should be added after more passive fish are established but before introducing more dominant tang species to help reduce hierarchy conflicts.

As an herbivore, the Tomini Tang requires a diet rich in marine algae and vegetable-based nutrition. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies daily using an algae clip along with Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 Frozen Food and Pellets, San Francisco Bay Brand Spirulina Mysis Shrimp, and New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets to maintain optimal health and coloration.
