Three-Stripe Damselfish – Dascyllus aruanus
The Three-Stripe Damselfish—also known as the Three Striped Damselfish, White-Tailed Damselfish, or Humbug Dascyllus—is a striking and popular marine fish known for its bold patterning. Its body displays three crisp black vertical bands separated by two bright white bands, with an additional small white bar highlighting the tail. Active, hardy, and visually iconic, this species spends much of its time weaving through rockwork and defending small territories as it matures.
This damselfish thrives in aquariums of at least 30 gallons that offer ample rock structures for hiding, grazing, and retreat. While juveniles may tolerate each other in small groups, adults often become more territorial and are best housed with moderately aggressive tankmates that can hold their own. Though assertive toward fish, the Three-Stripe Damselfish is reef-safe and will not harm invertebrates larger than its mouth or disturb aquarium décor.
Provide a varied diet consisting of meaty foods like PE Mysis, herbivore preparations such as Ocean Nutrition's Formula Two Frozen Food, Spirulina-based items like Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, and high-quality pellets such as TDO Chromaboost. A diverse feeding routine supports strong coloration, high energy levels, and long-term health in the home reef.
