Gem Tang — Ctenochaetus binotatus
The Gem Tang is one of the most sought-after and striking tangs in the reef aquarium hobby, known for its dazzling golden-yellow body speckled with distinctive black spots that give it a gem-like appearance. This peaceful and active grazer spends most of its time browsing on algae and detritus, helping to keep your tank clean while adding a pop of vibrant color. Its unique patterning and gentle nature make it a prized addition to mature reef tanks, although its relatively high value and care requirements make it better suited for experienced hobbyists.
Gem Tangs thrive in well-established reef tanks with stable water parameters, moderate flow, and ample live rock for grazing. Due to its active swimming behavior and territorial nature, a minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for better space and more stable environmental conditions.
Their diet should consist primarily of high-quality algae-based foods such as Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies, along with frozen or pellet foods from San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum. Supplementing with meaty foods, such as mysis or finely chopped shrimp, helps support healthy growth and vibrant coloration.
