Common Name: Regal Angelfish
Species Name: Pygoplites diacanthus

Physical Description & Behavior:

The Regal Angelfish is one of the most elegant and sought-after marine angelfish, showcasing a series of vivid vertical bands in blue, white, and yellow, often accented by an orange or yellow chest depending on origin. Its graceful swimming pattern and intricate coloration make it a true showpiece in established aquariums. Reaching up to ~9–10 inches as an adult, this species is considered delicate and best suited for experienced hobbyists, as it can be sensitive during acclimation. While sometimes kept in reef systems with caution, Regal Angelfish may nip at certain corals, sponges, and tunicates.

Suitable Tank Size & Environment:

A minimum tank size of 100 gallons is recommended, though larger, mature systems are strongly preferred. Provide extensive live rock for grazing, shaded areas for security, and open swimming space. This species should be introduced into a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and minimal aggression from tankmates to ensure long-term success.

Diet:

The Regal Angelfish is an omnivore with a strong preference for sponge-based foods. Offer a varied diet including high-quality angelfish preparations such as Hikari Mega Marine Angel, Ocean Nutrition Angel Formula, and sponge-containing frozen foods. Supplement with Mysis shrimp, Spirulina-enriched offerings, and marine algae like Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies to encourage feeding and maintain optimal health and coloration.
