Species: Zoanthus spp.
Coral Type: Soft Coral / Colonial Polyp
Red Hornet Zoanthids are a classic and highly desirable designer zoanthid known for their bold contrast and intense coloration. Each polyp typically features a deep red to crimson center surrounded by bright yellow or gold rings, with darker outer skirts that enhance the “hornet” pattern. The sharp color separation gives each polyp a striking, high-impact appearance that stands out even in densely packed zoa gardens. As colonies grow, they form tight mats of vividly colored polyps that add movement and richness to reef aquariums. Under actinic or blue-spectrum lighting, their fluorescent tones become especially vibrant, with reds and yellows glowing intensely.
Coral Type: Soft Coral / Zoanthid
Lighting: Moderate lighting requirements (approximately 75–150 PAR)
Flow Rate: Low to Moderate; gentle, indirect water movement supports healthy polyp extension and helps prevent debris buildup
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae; occasional feedings of fine particulate coral foods such as Reef Roids or Benereef may improve growth and coloration
Aggression: Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive; generally reef-safe, though colonies can spread quickly and may encroach on nearby corals if not managed
Placement: Best placed on isolated rock islands or stable reef structures where colonies have room to expand under consistent lighting and flow conditions
We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
