The Purple Tilefish is a stunning and uncommon reef species prized for its vivid lavender to violet body tones and streamlined, torpedo-shaped profile. Reaching an adult size of approximately 6 inches, this active swimmer is typically found hovering just above sandy substrate while darting in and out of burrows it constructs for shelter. Purple Tilefish are generally peaceful toward other non-competitive species but can be shy during acclimation and may retreat frequently until fully settled. Their constant hovering motion and brilliant coloration make them a standout in larger, peaceful marine aquariums.

The Purple Tilefish thrives in spacious reef or fish-only systems with a deep sandy bed and plenty of open swimming room. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended, with careful attention to providing a stable sandbed structure for burrow formation. This species should be added after the aquarium is well established and after more assertive feeders, allowing it time to settle without competition for food.

As a carnivore, the Purple Tilefish requires a varied diet of small meaty marine foods offered multiple times daily.
