Purple Tang — Zebrasoma xanthurum

The Purple Tang is a striking reef fish with a deep violet body, bright yellow eyes, and a vibrant yellow tail, making it a standout centerpiece in any marine aquarium. Active and energetic, it grazes continuously on algae across rockwork, helping control nuisance algae while displaying graceful swimming behaviors. Generally peaceful with other fish but territorial toward conspecifics, it thrives in well-established reef communities.

Purple Tangs thrive in mature reef tanks with stable water parameters, abundant live rock for grazing, and open swimming areas. Introduce only to established systems to reduce stress and encourage natural foraging. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and territorial nature.

Their diet should include high-quality algae-based and meaty foods from Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies, San Francisco Bay Brand, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum to maintain vibrant coloration and overall health. Target feeding promotes active grazing and robust vitality.
