Species: Seriatopora hystrix
Coral Type: SPS (Small Polyp Stony Coral)
Purple Polyp Birdsnest is a fast-growing, branching SPS coral known for its delicate structure and vivid polyp coloration. It forms intricate, tightly packed branches that create a dense, bush-like colony. The coral’s tissue typically ranges from pale pink to tan or light lavender, while the standout feature—its tiny polyps—glow in deep purple to violet tones, giving the entire colony a soft yet striking contrast. Under actinic or blue-spectrum lighting, the purple polyps become especially vibrant, creating a shimmering “dusting” effect across the fine branches.
This coral is prized for both its rapid growth and its ability to add fine texture and movement to SPS-dominated reef aquariums.
Coral Type: SPS
Lighting: Moderate to High lighting requirements (approximately 150–300 PAR)
Flow Rate: Moderate to High; strong, random flow is essential for healthy branching growth and waste removal
Food Requirements: Primarily photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae; benefits from stable water parameters and may respond positively to occasional amino acid or ultra-fine coral supplementation
Aggression: Peaceful; does not possess sweeper tentacles but requires space due to rapid branching growth
Placement: Best placed in upper rockwork or high-light zones with strong flow and plenty of open space to accommodate fast expansion
We maintain a rigorous, veterinarian-approved quarantine program that includes proactive treatments, careful observation, and daily monitoring to ensure the highest standards of coral and invertebrate health. Our biosecurity practices reduce the risk of any cross-contamination between systems, meaning all our livestock are ready for your display tanks.
