Plume Rock (Christmas Tree Rock) – Featuring Spirobranchus spp. Feather Dusters
Plume Rock—often called Christmas Tree Rock—is a unique, living reef piece encrusted with brightly colored Spirobranchus feather duster worms. These tiny filter feeders display vibrant “plume” crowns in shades of blue, orange, yellow, and white that retract instantly when startled. The rock itself is typically a small, porous coral skeleton hosting dozens of worms, creating a dynamic, natural micro-habitat. Its movement, color, and biological diversity make it a standout addition to both nano and large reef tanks.
A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is suitable, provided the system is stable and mature with consistent nutrient levels. Add Plume Rock after the tank is fully cycled, as these feather dusters require stable parameters and gentle to moderate flow to thrive. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or strong laminar flow that may cause the worms to remain retracted.
As filter feeders, the feather dusters benefit from targeted feedings of very fine particulate foods. Offer PE Cyclopods, Hikari Rotifers, or occasional feedings of PolypLab’s ReefRoids (noting that it can raise phosphates) or Benepets Benereef to support polyp health and long-term survival.
Approximate product size:
Typically sold as 1.5–3 inch rocks with multiple feather duster crowns, depending on availability.
