Orangespot Rabbitfish - Siganus guttatus

The Orangespot Rabbitfish is a striking herbivorous marine species featuring a silvery-gold body accented by bold orange spotting and subtle patterning that intensifies under strong reef lighting. Reaching an adult size of approximately 10 inches, this active swimmer is known for its constant grazing behavior and confident presence in the aquarium. Generally peaceful toward most tankmates, the Orangespot Rabbitfish may become territorial toward other rabbitfish or similarly shaped herbivores as it matures. Like all rabbitfish, it possesses venomous dorsal spines that require careful handling.

The Orangespot Rabbitfish thrives in large, established reef or fish-only aquariums with abundant live rock for grazing and open swimming space. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended due to its adult size and active feeding behavior. This species should be added after more delicate fish are established but before introducing highly territorial herbivores to reduce competition for grazing areas.

As an herbivore, the Orangespot Rabbitfish requires a diet rich in marine algae and vegetable-based nutrition to support long-term health and coloration. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies daily using an algae clip along with Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 Frozen Food and Pellets, San Francisco Bay Brand Spirulina Mysis Shrimp, and New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets for optimal dietary balance.
