Melanurus Wrasse- M

Melanurus Wrasse - Halichoeres melanurus

The Melanurus Wrasse is a vibrant and highly functional reef fish featuring a striking mix of green, blue, yellow, and orange tones that shift as the fish matures. Reaching an adult size of approximately 5 inches, this active wrasse is constantly patrolling the aquarium in search of food and pests. It is widely appreciated for its natural ability to consume nuisance flatworms, pyramidellid snails, and other small invertebrates. Generally peaceful with most tankmates, the Melanurus Wrasse may become mildly territorial toward other wrasses, especially similar Halichoeres species.

The Melanurus Wrasse thrives in established reef aquariums with a deep sand bed for nighttime sleeping and plenty of live rock for foraging. A minimum tank size of 75 gallons is recommended due to its active swimming behavior and adult size. This species should be added after more passive fish are established but before highly competitive or aggressive wrasses to reduce territorial disputes.

As a carnivore, the Melanurus Wrasse requires a varied diet of small meaty marine foods to support its metabolism and coloration. Offer PE Mysis, Hikari Brine Shrimp, PE Cyclopods, and high-quality marine pellets such as New Life Spectrum Marine Formula or TDO ChromaBoost for optimal health and reef utility performance.
