Common Name: Lieutenant Tang
Species Name: Acanthurus tennentii

The Lieutenant Tang is a sleek and active herbivorous surgeonfish, featuring a silvery-gray body with subtle blue highlights, a yellow-tinged dorsal area, and a distinctive dark shoulder marking that becomes more pronounced with age. Reaching up to 10–12 inches in adulthood, this species is constantly on the move, grazing on algae and contributing to overall tank cleanliness. While generally peaceful toward dissimilar species, it may show aggression toward other tangs, especially in smaller systems or when introduced improperly.

Lieutenant Tangs thrive in large, well-established aquariums with ample swimming space, strong water movement, and abundant live rock for natural grazing. Best introduced after more passive species but before other tangs to help reduce territorial conflicts. A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended to support their size, activity level, and long-term health.

Their diet should focus on herbivorous offerings such as Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 Frozen Food and Pellets, and New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets. Regularly provide Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies on an algae clip to encourage natural grazing behavior and maintain optimal coloration and health.

Approximate product size: 3"–5" (varies by availability)
