Hippo Tang – XL – Paracanthurus hepatus

The XL Hippo Tang displays the classic deep-blue body, bold black palette pattern, and bright yellow tail that make this species one of the most recognizable fish in the hobby. At this larger size, it shows confident, continuous swimming behavior and a strong presence in the aquarium. Known for its active personality and playful movements through rockwork, an XL Hippo Tang quickly becomes a standout centerpiece fish.

This species requires a large, mature reef system with long swimming runs, stable water parameters, and strong, oxygen-rich flow. Add only after the aquarium has been established for many months to ensure stability and reduced stress. A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended for an XL specimen.

Hippo Tangs are heavy grazers and should receive a varied diet that includes algae-based foods and premium offerings from San Francisco, Hikari, PE, TDO, and New Life Spectrum. For essential plant matter and continuous grazing nutrition, supplement daily with Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies.
