Halloween Hermit Crab - Ciliopagurus strigatus
The Halloween Hermit Crab is a bold and highly decorative reef invertebrate featuring bright orange legs with contrasting black striping and a reddish-orange body that gives it a festive, high-contrast appearance. Reaching an adult size of approximately 2 inches (excluding shell), this active scavenger is constantly moving across rockwork and substrate in search of food and detritus. While generally peaceful, it can become opportunistic if underfed and may show aggression toward other hermit crabs over available shells. Its vivid coloration and strong cleanup crew behavior make it a popular reef utility invertebrate.
The Halloween Hermit Crab thrives in established reef aquariums with live rock and a natural sandbed that supports microfauna and detritus feeding. A minimum tank size of 10–20 gallons is recommended for a small group, with additional shells provided to reduce competition and aggression. This species should be added after the tank has begun to mature and develop natural algae and biofilm for grazing.
As an omnivorous scavenger, the Halloween Hermit Crab benefits from a varied diet that includes both plant- and protein-based foods. Offer Julian Sprung’s Sea Veggies in an algae clip, New Life Spectrum Algae Pellets, and small meaty foods such as PE Mysis and Hikari Brine Shrimp to maintain health, molting success, and active foraging behavior.
